A Japanese-Inspired Back-to-School Season

This September, Paris Miki Opéra invites you to see the season of new beginnings through a different lens — one inspired by Japanese culture.
In Japan, the school year begins in April, when cherry blossoms are in full bloom. It symbolizes a fresh cycle, often associated with spring’s vitality, focus, discipline, and a certain gentleness of life. While the calendars may differ, the spirit of “back-to-school” — a moment of renewal and projection into the future — is universal.
Our September window pays tribute to this Japanese mindset, weaving together symbolic and poetic references. Origami cranes, for example, are a recurring motif in Japanese culture: legend says that folding one thousand cranes brings good fortune and health. They embody peace, longevity, and heartfelt wishes of protection.
Another nod to tradition is the randoseru — the iconic structured leather backpack carried by Japanese schoolchildren. Often passed down from one child to another, it has become a cultural symbol of durability, timeless design, and a touch of nostalgia.
In this display, eyewear, school supplies, and delicate origami converse in a serene, minimalist setting inspired by Japanese classrooms and the care devoted to everyday objects. Photographs of Japan complete the scene, like cherished memories pinned to the wall of a study.
